Hon. Justice Husseini Baba Yusuf is a Nigerian jurist who serves as the Chief Judge of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
Early life and education
He was born on June 1, 1962, and is from Ankpa Local Government Area of Kogi State. He began his formal education at LGEA Primary School, Ankpa (1966 to 1971), then attended St. Charles College (1972 to 1976). He proceeded to the School of Basic Studies, Ugbokolo for his A Level education (1977 to 1980).
Justice Baba Yusuf studied Law at the University of Lagos and completed professional legal training at the Nigerian Law School, after which he was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1984.
Judicial career and rise in service
Over the years, he rose through Nigeria’s judicial system and became widely regarded for discipline, leadership, and commitment to the rule of law. His progression through public service eventually positioned him for leadership in the FCT judiciary.
Appointment as Acting Chief Judge of the FCT
In 2021, President Muhammadu Buhari approved his appointment as Acting Chief Judge of the High Court of the FCT, following a recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC). The NJC stated that the appointment took effect from August 1, 2021, and that he would be sworn in by the Chief Justice of Nigeria.
Confirmation as substantive Chief Judge
After serving in acting capacity, the Senate confirmed his nomination as the Chief Judge of the FCT High Court in October 2021, in line with constitutional procedure.
