Early Life and Childhood

Juice WRLD was born Jarad Anthony Higgins on December 2, 1998, in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in the suburb of Homewood, raised primarily by his mother after his parents separated when he was three years old. His father was largely absent from his life, and his mother, who was deeply religious, raised him and his older brother in a strict Christian household.

His mother did not allow him to listen to hip hop music while growing up. Instead, he was exposed to rock and pop artists such as Billy Idol, Black Sabbath, and Fall Out Boy. This early exposure to rock music would later shape his melodic and emotional style.

Jarad began playing piano at the age of four. He later learned to play drums, guitar, and trumpet. Music became an escape for him. During his teenage years, he began listening to rap music secretly. He was influenced by artists such as Lil Wayne, Chief Keef, and Future.

He attended Homewood Flossmoor High School, where he started experimenting with recording music. It was also during this time that he began using drugs, including lean and Percocet. His struggles with substance use would later become a central theme in his music.

The Beginning of Juice WRLD

Jarad began recording music in 2015 under the name JuicetheKidd, inspired by the film Juice starring Tupac Shakur. He later changed his name to Juice WRLD to represent taking over the world.

He uploaded his songs to SoundCloud, where he began to build a loyal following. His early tracks showed a unique ability to freestyle entire songs, blending singing and rapping effortlessly. His emotional openness and melodic flow quickly stood out in the emerging wave of emo rap.

In 2017, he released the song Lucid Dreams on SoundCloud. The track sampled Sting’s Shape of My Heart and became a viral hit. Its haunting lyrics about heartbreak and emotional pain connected deeply with young listeners.

Breakthrough Success

Lucid Dreams officially released in 2018 and climbed to number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The success of the song led to a major record deal with Grade A Productions and Interscope Records.

In May 2018, Juice WRLD released his debut studio album Goodbye and Good Riddance. The album featured hits such as All Girls Are the Same and Lean Wit Me. It was praised for its raw vulnerability and honest discussion of mental health, heartbreak, addiction, and loneliness.

Unlike many artists, Juice WRLD often recorded songs in a single take, freestyling entire verses. His creative process was fast and instinctive. He once claimed he could make multiple songs in one studio session without writing anything down.

Tragic Death

On December 8, 2019, just six days after his twenty first birthday, Juice WRLD suffered a seizure at Chicago Midway International Airport. He later died at a nearby hospital. The Cook County Medical Examiner determined that his death was caused by an accidental overdose of oxycodone and codeine.

His death shocked the music world. Fans around the globe mourned deeply, holding vigils and sharing tributes online. He was only twenty one years old.

Posthumous Releases and Legacy

After his passing, his team and family released Legends Never Die in 2020. The album debuted at number one and broke streaming records. It featured songs such as Wishing Well and Come and Go. The project reflected his emotional struggles and artistic growth.

Another posthumous album, Fighting Demons, was released in 2021. It continued to explore themes of inner conflict, fame, and mental health.
