Prince Adewale (POV)
I watched her leave, thoughtful.
She was different. Not just in beauty—but in presence. She did not beg for attention, yet she drew it. The palace had a way of breaking people quickly. She, however, was still standing.
When she returned with my breakfast, her steps were slower. Careful. Burdened.
I noticed.
“You carry more than food today,” I said.
She placed the tray down and bowed. “The palace is heavy, my prince.”
“That it is.”
I studied her face. “The others are not kind to you.”
Her silence answered for her.
“You must understand something,” I continued. “People fear what they do not understand. And they envy what they think they cannot have.”
She looked up briefly. “I do not want what I cannot afford to lose.”
A dangerous thing to say. A wise thing too.
I nodded. “Good. Hold on to that.”
She turned to leave, but stopped. “My prince?”
“Yes?”
“Why did you choose me?”
The question hung between us, fragile and exposed.
“Because,” I said slowly, “you do your work with dignity. And this palace needs more of that.”
It was only part of the truth.

That afternoon, I overheard them.
“She thinks she can walk into the prince’s room like she owns it.”
“Wait until she makes one mistake.”
“The palace has swallowed bigger girls than her.”
Their words crawled under my skin.
I scrubbed floors harder than necessary, my arms aching, my spirit tired. Yet when I returned to clean the prince’s chamber again later, the room felt like a small island of calm in a sea of hostility.
“You look tired,” he observed.
“I am learning quickly,” I replied.
He nodded. “So am I.”
As I swept near the window, our eyes met briefly. Something unspoken passed between us understanding, maybe.
Or warning.
That night, as I lay on my mat, I realized the truth I had been avoiding:
The palace was watching me now.
The maids were counting my steps.
And the prince… he was no longer just my master.
He was becoming some one I can talk to....
