Chapter One: The Door That Opened My Eyes
If anyone had told me Lola would be the reason my world collapsed,
I would have laughed.
Because Lola wasn’t just my friend.
She was my chosen sister.
She was there the day Daniel proposed to me screaming louder than I did, jumping up and down like it was her ring too.
“God finally did it for you!” she shouted, hugging me until my ribs hurt.
She helped me pick my wedding dress.
She held my phone while I cried happy tears during video calls with Daniel.
She corrected spelling errors on our wedding invitations.
“Everything must be perfect,” she kept saying.
“This is your forever.”
And I believed her.
Daniel and I had been together for four years four long years of patience, distance, late-night prayers, and whispered promises. When he finally paid my bride price, my mother cried.
“Marry him well,” she said.
“He looks like a good man.”
Lola agreed.
“He worships the ground you walk on,” she said. “You’re lucky.”
I was.
Or so I thought.
Two weeks to the wedding, Daniel returned to town. Lola volunteered immediately.
“I’ll help him settle in,” she said casually. “You’re too busy with preparations.”
Why would I argue?
This was the same woman who once slapped a man for disrespecting me.
The same woman who slept on my floor when I had nothing.
The same woman I trusted with my life.
The first sign came quietly.
Daniel stopped calling as much. When he did, his voice felt distant.
“I’m tired.”
“I’m with friends.”
“I’ll call you later.”
Later never came.
When I mentioned it, Lola laughed.
“You’re overthinking. Pre wedding anxiety is normal.”
So I relaxed.
I trusted.
Three days later, I decided to surprise Daniel.
I cooked his favorite meal. I smiled the entire ride there. I imagined his face lighting up when he saw me.
I knocked.
No answer.
I knocked again.
Then I heard laughter.
A woman’s laughter.
Familiar.
My heart skipped before my mind could catch up.
The door opened.
And in that moment, everything I believed about love, loyalty, and friendship shattered.
