IGP Egbetokun Defies Tinubu’s Order, Approves Police Escorts for INEC Commissioners Nationwide
Despite President Bola Tinubu’s directive ordering the withdrawal of police security from VIPs and government officials, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has approved the continued deployment of police escorts to top officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Documents obtained by SaharaReporters show that the approval covers National Commissioners, Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), directors, and the Acting Director-General of INEC’s Electoral Institute across the country.
The approval, conveyed in a January 8, 2026 letter signed by a senior police officer on behalf of the IGP, followed an appeal by INEC citing the sensitive nature of its constitutional duties and repeated attacks on its officials and facilities. INEC later confirmed the exemption, explaining that the decision was necessary to safeguard electoral personnel amid persistent security threats.
The move contrasts with earlier assurances by the IGP that over 11,000 officers withdrawn from VIP protection would be redeployed to frontline policing to strengthen public safety nationwide. The exemption granted to INEC officials has now sparked fresh debate over the scope and consistency of the President’s security directive.
