Islamic Council Rejects Claims of Christian Genocide in Nigeria
The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs has rejected claims that Christians are being targeted for genocide in Nigeria. Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, the council’s Secretary General, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, said while killings have occurred in parts of the country, the violence is not directed at Christians alone. He argued that the genocide narrative was promoted by unpatriotic individuals to create division and mislead the international community. Oloyede nevertheless urged the Federal Government to strengthen security efforts to protect all citizens.
The council’s response follows accusations by U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, who alleged that Nigerian authorities were complicit in widespread killings of Christians and the destruction of churches. Former U.S. President Donald Trump also warned that Christianity faced an existential threat in Nigeria and threatened possible military action if the violence continued.
