June 12: A Day of Democracy and Global Awareness

Every year, June 12 stands out as a date filled with historical weight and global significance.
In Nigeria, June 12 is observed as Democracy Day, honoring the pivotal 1993 presidential election believed to be the freest and fairest in the country’s history. Though the presumed winner, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola (MKO Abiola), was never sworn into office, the day symbolizes the resilience and voice of the Nigerian people in their quest for true democratic governance.
On the global stage, June 12 is also marked as the World Day Against Child Labour. Established by the International Labour Organization (ILO), this day calls attention to the plight of millions of children around the world who are denied their right to education, freedom, and a safe childhood due to labor exploitation.
June 12 is more than a moment in time—it’s a movement. Whether it's fighting for democracy or advocating for children's rights, it reminds us that progress begins when we speak up and stand together.
