“The Silent Struggle Behind My PhD Journey” – Patience Jonathan

Pursuing a PhD was never meant to be easy—but I never expected that the biggest obstacle would be the very people meant to guide me.

From the first year, I faced what I now call “institutional resistance.” Questions were dismissed. Progress was delayed for months over trivial issues. One supervisor told me bluntly, “You don’t belong here.” Another insisted on rewriting my entire proposal three times, only to approve the version I originally submitted.

The pressure wasn't just academic—it was psychological. I began to doubt myself. I felt invisible, voiceless, and isolated in a system that favored silence over critical thought.

At one point, I drafted a withdrawal letter. But something inside me refused to quit. I found mentors outside my department, joined support groups, and leaned on a small circle of friends who reminded me why I started.

Today, I’m not just finishing—I’m thriving. But I’ll never forget how close I came to giving up. To every student out there: your struggle is valid. Don’t let anyone silence your ambition.
