Trump Invites Families of Shot National Guard Members to White House, Vows to Honor Fallen and Wounded Soldiers
Former President Donald Trump says he has spoken with the families of two West Virginia National Guard members who were shot in Washington, D.C., last week—20-year-old Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, who died from her injuries, and Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, who remains in critical condition. Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump said both families were devastated and that he invited them to the White House whenever they feel ready, pledging to honor Beckstrom and Wolfe for their service.
The soldiers were deployed to D.C. earlier this year after Trump signed an executive order aimed at combating crime in the city. The suspected shooter, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national who entered the U.S. under Operation Allies Welcome, has been charged with first-degree murder and multiple counts of assault with intent to kill. The Justice Department intends to seek the death penalty.
Vigils in West Virginia have paid tribute to Beckstrom, remembered as a courageous young woman with a generous heart. State leaders, including Governor Patrick Morrisey, praised her legacy and service.
