A civil society organisation, Grassroot Advocacy for Peace and Good Governance, has claimed that the recent threats from U.S. President Donald Trump were not about alleged religious persecution but rather a reaction to Nigeria’s refusal to approve a U.S. military base and deportee resettlement deal.

Addressing journalists in Birnin Kebbi on Monday, the group’s chairman, Usman Muhammed Anache, alleged that Washington had been pressuring Abuja to allow the establishment of a U.S. military base following the withdrawal of American forces from Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso.

According to him, Nigeria’s decision to decline the proposal, coupled with its recent alignment with BRICS, the economic bloc led by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, may have further strained relations between the two countries.

“The U.S. is displeased because Nigeria refused its request to set up a military base and to house American deportees. They have now resorted to using religion, knowing how sensitive Nigerians are to faith-related issues,” Anache said.

He commended Nigerian Christian leaders who openly rejected Trump’s claim of “Christian genocide,” noting that terrorist attacks in the country have affected both Muslims and Christians alike.

Anache further praised the Federal Government for what he described as its steadfastness in defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and promoting peace across West Africa.

Despite the caution, members of Sowore’s Take It Back Movement reportedly staged a peaceful protest on Monday. Security operatives later dispersed the crowd with tear gas, while Sowore himself was said to be absent.

Addressing journalists, the Police Commissioner accused Sowore of plotting to disrupt traffic on the Third Mainland Bridge and cause chaos in the city. “He has put plans in motion to obstruct movement on the bridge, which is a serious offence. We will not allow that to happen. We are closing in on him, and wherever he is, we will get him,” Jimoh said.

He further alleged that Sowore flew into Lagos from Abuja but avoided appearing at the protest site. “He didn’t come down because he is afraid. We have it on video,” the CP added.

Sowore, who reacted on his social media handle on Monday, described the police action as a deliberate attempt to intimidate and silence him after officers disrupted a planned gathering in the Oworonshoki area of Lagos.

“The Lagos Police Commissioner, Moshood Jimoh, has reportedly declared me wanted for ‘disturbance of public peace,’ simply because his men failed to execute an unlawful ‘shoot-on-sight’ order from the IGP,” Sowore stated.


He further revealed that despite several calls to the Commissioner, Jimoh refused to answer, adding that he plans to meet with him soon to clarify the situation.

Earlier, the Lagos Police Command had announced Sowore’s “wanted” status, alleging that he and his associates planned to disrupt major routes in the state, including the Third Mainland Bridge, Lekki Tollgate, and Freedom Park.

“It is only someone who needs examination that would attempt to block such a vital route used by thousands daily,” CP Jimoh told journalists.

The Ogun State Government has sealed the Adatan Market in Abeokuta for environmental infractions and illegal roadside trading.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency, OGEPA, Farouk Akintunde, who also doubles as the Chairman Ogun State Task Force on Environmental Compliance, made this known to journalists after an enforcement exercise on Tuesday.

Akintunde explained that Adatan Market was sealed due to traders dumping refuse indiscriminately in drainage channels and displaying goods on the walkways and drainages.

He warned that the government would no longer tolerate disregard for environmental regulations.

“Market traders across Ogun State should take ownership of drainage channels in front of their shops, desilt and clear them to prevent flooding, while they should also note that Thursday of the week has been set aside in Ogun State for markets to observe sanitation which must be strictly adhered to,” he said.

Akintunde revealed that the enforcement and eventual closure of the market followed several months of warnings and engagements with traders which they refused to yield to.

The OGEPA boss noted that the series of enforcement actions underscored the state government’s zero tolerance for environmental pollution and its renewed commitment to keeping the state clean.

Jimoh said intelligence reports received by the command indicated that certain groups were planning to stage demonstrations to protest the state government’s demolition exercise in Oworonshoki.

The police chief stressed that the command would not tolerate any public gathering that could obstruct traffic, disrupt daily activities, or escalate into violence.

“We want to warn Sowore and his group to stay away from Lagos or face the full weight of the law,” Jimoh declared. “No individual or group will be allowed to endanger public safety or disrupt the peace we are working hard to maintain.”

The commissioner announced that the command had already deployed a significant number of officers to strategic locations across the city, including Ojota, Maryland, Gani Fawehinmi Park, Gbagada, Bariga, and Lekki Toll Gate, as part of a proactive effort to forestall any unauthorized protest.

According to Makama, the woman whose identity has not yet been revealed ended her life shortly after the forced marriage arrangement was finalized. “Tragedy struck in Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State on Sunday evening, when a young woman reportedly took her own life after being forced by her father to marry one of his friends,” he stated.

Citing local sources, Makama revealed that the incident occurred around 6:20 p.m. after the victim, said to be in deep emotional distress, succumbed to the overwhelming pressure from her family to go through with the arranged marriage.

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has accused Nigerian security operatives of opening fire and releasing tear gas on peaceful protesters during Monday’s #FreeNnamdiKanu rally in Abuja.

Speaking on The Morning Brief on Channels Television, Sowore claimed that the protest had barely begun in front of the Transcorp Hilton when security forces arrived in large numbers and launched an unprovoked attack.

“There were about 10 trucks that arrived as soon as we started the protest. There was no provocation on our part, like we had promised, it was an orderly and peaceful protest,” he said.

“Suddenly, from nowhere, they started shooting at us, tear gas, some live bullets were f+red. Luckily, I don’t think anybody was hit with live bullets, but they were just shooting all around us.

Eventually, they did arrest some people. I heard Nnamdi Kanu’s younger brother was arrested and beaten, and his lawyer was also arrested and beaten. They’ve all been taken to the FCT Command,” Sowore added.

He alleged that a combined team of police, army, and civil defence personnel carried out the operation but confirmed that none of his team members was hit by live rounds.

The Executive Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ( EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has stated that all the recoveries made so far under him by the Commission are deposited to the Federal Government in the Central Bank of Nigeria.

According to Olukoyede, since he took over the mantle of leadership two years ago, the Commission has recovered the sum of N360b, and a massive estate comprising 753 duplexes from corrupt individuals and the money was deposited in the Central Bank of Nigeria, out of this, the federal government directed that N50b was released for students loan under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND ).

He added that the recovered 753 duplexes were handed over to the Federal Ministry of Housing , following a directive from the federal government that the houses should be completed and allocated to Nigerians.

Olukoyede who is making two years of impactful fight against corruption with a record of 4,111 convictions, further revealed that it is only the federal government that has the power to give directives on how the recovered loot will be spent.

He made the clarifications on Friday, October 17, 2025 at a one-day workshop held in Ibadan Zonal Directorate for Journalists and Civil Society Organizations, (CSOs), organized by the Commission.

Olukoyede who spoke through the Acting Zonal Director, Ibadan Directorate of the EFCC, ACE 1 Hauwa Garba Ringim and the Spokesperson of the anti-graft body, Dele Oyewale also hinted that the EFCC under the current leadership of Ola Olukoyede, in 2024 alone arraigned five ex-governors and five ex-ministers with no let or hindrance.

Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has revealed that the country requires $1.2 billion over the next five years to bridge its financing gap and meet national gender equality and social inclusion targets.

Speaking in Abuja during the annual general meeting and founder’s day celebration of the League of Women Voters of Nigeria (NILOWV), the minister emphasised that closing the gap demands “bold partnerships and investment in women’s advancement.”

Represented by her special adviser, Ola Erinfolami, Sulaiman-Ibrahim said the federal government is exploring blended finance models, public-private partnerships, and impact investments to fund programmes that support women, children, and families.

On the Reserved Seats Bill, she commended the National Assembly for backing efforts to increase women’s political participation, describing it as a “strategic investment in democracy and national progress.”

The Etsu Nupe, Yahaya Abubakar, also endorsed the bill, urging lawmakers across all levels to pass it for more inclusive governance.

Similarly, Olufolake Abdulrazaq, chairperson of the Nigerian Governors’ Spouses Forum represented by Hauwa Halira called for mobilising broad support to ensure women’s full political inclusion before the 2027 general elections.

In their remarks, NILOWV founder Esther Udehi and President Irene Awunah-Ikyegh urged grassroots advocacy to boost understanding of the Reserved Seats Bill, while Aishatu Bura, President of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), stressed the media’s vital role in amplifying women’s voices and driving inclusive discourse.
