Gunmen Kill SuperSport Crew Members, Police Officer En Route to AFCON Qualifier – NFF

Tragedy struck as gunmen ambushed and killed members of the SuperSport crew and a police officer on their way to cover Nigeria's 2025 AFCON qualifier against Libya in Uyo

Gunmen have tragically killed members of the SuperSport broadcast crew and a police officer on their way to cover Nigeria’s 2025 AFCON qualifier against Libya in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed the attack, which occurred on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, along the Ihiala-Orlu Road in Anambra State.

According to the NFF, the victims were ambushed by kidnappers who opened fire on the bus carrying SuperSport staff and security personnel. The attack led to the immediate deaths of a cameraman, a police officer, and the bus driver.

NFF President Ibrahim Gusau expressed deep sadness over the incident. Despite Nigeria’s 1-0 victory against Libya, Gusau said the loss of lives overshadowed the Super Eagles’ triumph.

“Yes, we won the match and earned three points, but losing three lives has cast a shadow over the victory, and it hurts deeply to even think about the tragedy,” Gusau remarked.

He highlighted Nigeria’s long-standing relationship with SuperSport and extended condolences to the families of the deceased, praying for comfort and the safe return of one individual still missing after the ambush.

Out of the 14 people in the vehicle during the attack, eight were rescued, two managed to escape, three were killed, and one remains unaccounted for, according to the NFF.
