Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja has denied the medical bail application of Tigran Gambaryan, a detained executive of Binance Holdings, who is facing $35.4 million money laundering charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
In his ruling, Justice Nwite refused the request for bail on health grounds, stating that renowned Nigerian medical professionals were already managing Gambaryan’s condition. However, the judge ordered the Nigerian Correctional Service to transfer Gambaryan to a reputable hospital in Abuja for treatment, under security supervision, for a period of three days to two weeks.
The case was adjourned to October 18, November 22, and 25 for further proceedings. Gambaryan's counsel, Mark Mordi, had previously argued that his client’s health was in a critical state, requiring surgery for a herniated disc and psychiatric care due to depression and anxiety. Mordi requested six weeks of bail for Gambaryan to receive proper medical attention outside the prison, citing insufficient care in detention.
EFCC lawyer Ekele Iheanacho opposed the bail request, claiming the defense had exaggerated the seriousness of Gambaryan’s health condition. He stated that Gambaryan had access to high-quality medical care, including treatment at the State House Clinic and Nizamiye Hospital, where reports indicated he had refused treatment and showed no signs of deteriorating health. Iheanacho emphasized that the Nigerian Correctional Service was adequately handling his care and that no evidence justified the need for bail on medical grounds.
Gambaryan remains in custody as the trial continues.
