The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has charged former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Usman Yusuf, with five counts of alleged fraud. Yusuf was arraigned before Justice Chinyere Nwecheonwu at the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Kuje, Abuja.
Yusuf pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read out to him. His defense lawyer, O.I Habeeb, requested that he be remanded in EFCC custody until the bail hearing. However, Justice Nwecheonwu clarified that Yusuf, having been arraigned, was no longer in EFCC custody and ordered his remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja, until the bail application is heard.
The charges against Yusuf stem from accusations that he misused his office to benefit personally between 2016 and 2017. He is also alleged to have awarded contracts without adhering to the proper procurement processes. The case has been adjourned until February 12, 2025, for further proceedings.
