A tragic incident occurred on Friday during the Nigerian Army’s Bi-Annual Route March near Myhoung Barracks in Yaba, Lagos, when a private vehicle driven recklessly ran into a group of troops.
According to a statement by Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Ayeni, the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 81 Division, one soldier lost his life while others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The deceased soldier’s body has been moved to the mortuary, while the injured are receiving treatment at the 68 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Yaba.
The 81 Division Military Police, in collaboration with other relevant security agencies, is conducting a thorough investigation into the incident's circumstances. Major General Farouk Mijinyawa, the General Officer Commanding 81 Division, expressed his deepest condolences to the soldier’s family and wished a speedy recovery to the injured troops.
The GOC also urged the public to remain calm as investigations proceed. He emphasized that despite this tragic event, the Division remains committed to its training and operational readiness to continue its mission of protecting lives and property in accordance with the Nigerian Army’s constitutional duties.
The route march, which is part of the Army’s routine training to improve operational readiness, involved multiple Nigerian Army formations across Lagos State.
