The Nigerian military has reported significant successes in its ongoing counterterrorism and insurgency operations, neutralizing 358 terrorists and arresting 431 suspects in January 2025.
Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, shared these details in a statement on Friday, highlighting the military's continued efforts to defeat terrorist groups and their associates across the country.
In addition to the arrests and neutralizations, troops apprehended 59 individuals involved in oil theft and rescued 249 kidnapped hostages. The military also reported preventing the theft of over N2 billion worth of oil in the South-South region, where they seized large quantities of stolen crude oil and illegal refined products.
The operation led to the recovery of 370 weapons and 4,972 rounds of ammunition, including 105 AK47 rifles, 25 locally-made guns, 32 dane guns, 23 pump action guns, and a variety of other arms and ammunition.
A breakdown of the seized oil products includes:
- 2,732,038 liters of stolen crude oil
- 42,515 liters of illegally refined AGO (Automotive Gas Oil)
- 200 liters of DPK (Dual Purpose Kerosene)
- 2,250 liters of PMS (Premium Motor Spirit)
The military's statement emphasized that these efforts are part of their sustained campaign to ensure the safety and security of Nigerian citizens. Troops remain committed to neutralizing threats and maintaining peace across the country.
