Omoyele Sowore, convener of the #RevolutionNow protest, has been arraigned on cybercrime charges before Justice Musa Liman of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Sowore appeared before the police on January 27, 2025, following an invitation, where he was questioned at the Force Criminal Investigation Department. After being granted administrative bail, he refused the conditions and remained in police custody.

The police filed a 16-count cybercrime charge against Sowore, accusing him of making defamatory statements about the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. On December 20, 2024, Sowore allegedly called Egbetokun "the illegal IG of Nigeria Police Force" via his X handle. He also posted a picture of Egbetokun with a caption criticizing the police leadership, describing it as "mediocrity, incompetence, and corruption," and claimed that "IGP Kayode Egbetokun will destroy the Nigeria Police if we don’t act now."

Sowore pleaded not guilty to the charges
