The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced plans to release an enhanced multipurpose biometric ID card designed to address a wide range of federal and private sector needs.
Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja, NIMC Director General Dr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote explained the card’s innovative features, including fingerprint-based biometric authentication, offline and online capabilities, and integrated banking details for seamless financial transactions.
The initiative, in collaboration with the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS), aims to enhance identity verification, promote financial inclusion, and support government intervention programs.
Dr. Coker-Odusote emphasized that the card, dubbed the Government to People (G2P) card, will ensure secure, verifiable identification for citizens participating in social and economic initiatives.
NIBSS CEO Premier Oiwoh highlighted its role in integrating payment systems like QR code functionalities, allowing users to authenticate and access accounts effortlessly.
The new ID card will be affordably priced and is expected to play a critical role in alleviating poverty for millions of Nigerians.
