A tragic bus accident in northern Ethiopia’s Dawunt district, located in the Amhara region, has left 25 people dead, local police confirmed on Thursday.
The incident also caused serious injuries to 14 others, who are currently receiving medical treatment at hospitals in Delanta and Dessie, according to local authorities.
Road accidents are frequent in Ethiopia, Africa’s second-most populous country, where many roads are poorly maintained, contributing to such tragic incidents.
This latest accident follows other devastating road tragedies in the country. In December, over 70 people lost their lives when a truck carrying a wedding party plunged into a river. Similarly, in September, at least 28 people died when a bus veered off the road and fell into a river in southern Ethiopia.
Ethiopia, a rugged and landlocked nation in the Horn of Africa, is bisected by the Great Rift Valley and faces significant challenges in improving road safety.
