The arrest follows recent protests in Nairobi demanding action against femicide.
Police in Kenya arrested a man on Wednesday after they discovered the mutilated body of his wife in a backpack. The shocking incident is the latest in a series of gender-based violence cases that have alarmed the country.
The arrest occurred in the early hours when police on routine patrol in Nairobi stopped John Kiama Wambua, 29, and found part of a human body in his bag. Initially suspected of carrying illegal items, police were stunned when the contents were revealed to be parts of a mutilated body.
During questioning, Wambua confirmed the remains belonged to his 19-year-old wife, Joy Fridah Munani. He led officers to their home, where a disturbing scene unfolded. A bloody floor, bloodstained clothing, and a sharp knife, presumed to be the weapon, were discovered. Further human remains were found beneath a bed, though some parts were still missing.
This arrest comes amid rising concern over femicide in Kenya. Just weeks ago, hundreds of women rallied in Nairobi against gender-based violence, only to be met with tear gas. Activists have long warned about the growing violence against women, with the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights reporting 97 murders of women in the last three months alone.
The case follows other recent tragedies, including the murder of Ugandan Olympic runner Rebecca Cheptegei, who was tragically killed in a domestic violence incident in Kenya.
