Major General Herzi Halevi, the head of Israel’s military, tendered his resignation on Monday, citing his responsibility for the army’s shortcomings during Hamas’s surprise attack on October 7, 2023.

In a statement accompanying his resignation letter, Halevi said, “I am stepping down due to my acknowledgment of responsibility for the military’s failure on October 7,” referring to the attacks that resulted in significant loss of life and security breaches.

Halevi also emphasized the military’s recent accomplishments, noting his departure comes during a period of “significant successes” for Israel’s defense forces.
