The tragic death of EFCC officer, Assistant Superintendent Aminu Sahabi Salisu, who was killed in Anambra State on January 17, 2025, has sparked significant attention on social media. The EFCC has confirmed that Salisu was fatally shot while conducting a legitimate operation targeting internet fraudsters.
In a statement released by Dele Oyewale, the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, the Commission expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Salisu, who was carrying out his official duties when he was killed by suspected fraudster Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu.
The raid occurred at Dr. J.O. Ukwutinife Close, Ifite, Awka, Anambra, where the EFCC had apprehended 37 suspects. However, when investigators approached Ikechukwu’s apartment, he refused to open his door, despite being aware of their presence. Ikechukwu then opened fire, killing Salisu and injuring another officer.
The EFCC has rejected claims that the raid was illegal, responding firmly to false narratives circulating on social media. The Commission stressed that the officer's death was not a result of an unlawful operation but rather the violent actions of a criminal. It condemned the baseless claims and emphasized the importance of preserving the dignity of the fallen officer and his family.
Investigations revealed Ikechukwu’s involvement in internet fraud, with recovered items including laptops, iPads, and recording devices, all linking him to illegal online activities. He remains in police custody and is expected to face trial for his actions.
The EFCC further warned the public about the growing dangers posed by internet fraudsters, highlighting that these criminals are often linked to more serious crimes such as kidnapping, banditry, and ritual killings. The Commission reiterated that any attack on its officers would be met with the full force of the law, emphasizing its commitment to fighting corruption and ensuring the safety of its personnel.
