Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has voiced strong criticism of the Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government, accusing it of neglecting the hardworking citizens while allowing government officials to engage in corruption. Obi expressed his disappointment with the current state of governance in the country, particularly pointing to the ongoing poverty and malnutrition crisis.
Speaking at the Godfrey Okoye School of Nursing in Enugu State on Tuesday, Obi cited troubling reports from the World Bank and UNICEF that highlight Nigeria’s worsening economic indicators. He condemned the mismanagement of resources, asserting that instead of addressing critical national issues, the government has used resources for improper purposes.
“We’ve turned governance into a crime scene,” Obi remarked. “Instead of using the resources for the right cause, they are being used for the wrong one.”
Obi called for an urgent overhaul in governance, insisting that the nation’s resources should serve the people and not just a select few. He stressed that dismantling the current corruption and mismanagement is vital for Nigeria’s progress. “Other countries are making it work, and there’s no reason why this country can’t work too,” he said.
He also brought attention to Nigeria’s severe shortage of healthcare professionals, pointing out the demand for 1.2 million nurses, while the country currently has fewer than 200,000 registered nurses. Obi emphasized that the country’s need for healthcare workers is pressing and that the government must address this issue urgently.
Obi commended the efforts of volunteer organizations, particularly churches, in supporting key healthcare initiatives like teaching hospitals. He remarked, “What you are doing is what the government should be doing. That’s the true job of government.”
In his speech, Obi underscored the importance of governance that prioritizes the people and promotes effective action to tackle the country’s most pressing issues.
