Former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo and youth leaders from the four Ogoni local government areas in Rivers State have endorsed the proposed resumption of oil exploration in the region. However, they emphasize the need for active involvement of youths and women in decision-making.

At a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt, representatives from Khana, Gokana, Tai, and Eleme LGAs praised President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to address the longstanding Ogoni struggle for social, economic, and environmental justice. They expressed confidence in National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu’s ability to oversee the process effectively.

In a communiqué presented by Ogoni Youth Federation President Legborsi Yamaabana, the youths insisted that any decision regarding Oil Mining Licenses (OML) 11 and 51 must involve meaningful engagement with the Ogoni people, ensuring their free, prior, and informed consent.

They also commended NSA Nuhu Ribadu, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for facilitating discussions with the President.

Speaking at the event, Yobo urged the Ogoni people to embrace the opportunity, expressing confidence in President Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring tangible benefits for the community. Other youth leaders echoed this sentiment, seeing the renewed talks as a chance to transform oil exploration into a source of prosperity rather than conflict.
