Over the past three days, Goma, the capital of North Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has been the epicenter of intense clashes between the national army and M23 rebels, reportedly supported by Rwandan forces. These confrontations have resulted in over 100 deaths and nearly 1,000 injuries, causing local hospitals to operate beyond capacity.

Medical personnel have expressed concerns about the numerous bodies still present in the city, emphasizing the urgent need for their retrieval to prevent health hazards. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has reported that missiles are flying over civilians' homes, with fighters firing heavy artillery in Goma's city center, leading to a significant number of civilian casualties.

The M23 rebels have seized control of Goma's airport, a strategic asset in the region. The security situation remains volatile, with reports of ongoing violence, looting, and civilian displacement. The United Nations has highlighted the dire humanitarian crisis, noting that hospitals are overwhelmed by the influx of wounded individuals.

In response to the escalating conflict, Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi is scheduled to meet with Rwandan President Paul Kagame at an emergency summit convened by the East African Community. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with calls for an immediate ceasefire and respect for sovereign territorial integrity.

The resurgence of the M23 rebellion has exacerbated tensions between the DRC and Rwanda, with the conflict's roots tracing back to the aftermath of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. The ongoing violence has led to a severe humanitarian crisis, with hundreds of thousands displaced and critical infrastructure damaged. Aid organizations are facing challenges in reaching those in need due to the security situation.

As the situation develops, there are growing concerns about the potential for the conflict to escalate into a broader regional war, underscoring the urgent need for diplomatic interventions and comprehensive peace efforts.
