Impeached Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, has described the corruption accusations leveled against him as “baseless and unfounded.”
Speaking at a rally held at his residence in Ikeja’s GRA, Obasa asserted that his removal was unjust, claiming it was orchestrated while he was out of the country. He accused the Lagos State Commissioner of Police of enabling the impeachment process, alleging that over 200 officers invaded his homes and the assembly complex, locking his family indoors.
Mocking the claims of misappropriation, Obasa humorously questioned allegations that a gate construction cost ₦16 billion, saying, “Is it the wall of Jericho?”
Obasa defended his legacy, emphasizing his six-term representation of his constituents and stating that his impeachment lacked proper procedure. He cited precedents, noting that previous assembly leadership changes under Jokotola Pelumi and Adefunmilayo Tejuosho were conducted without police intervention.
“I am not afraid of being removed. Lagos State deserves better, and innocent people should not be discredited without proof,” he said.
Despite his impeachment on January 13 by over two-thirds of the 40-member legislative house, Obasa remains confident in his record and the support of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, whom he described as a “brother.”
Following Obasa’s removal, his deputy, Mojisola Meranda, was elected as the new speaker, marking a historic moment as the first female speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
