A specialized team from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has arrived in Ondo State to help manage the rising cases of Lassa fever in the region.

During a meeting with state government officials, Dr. Olubunmi Olopha, the leader of the NCDC team, emphasized the agency’s commitment to providing necessary support to combat the outbreak.

Dr. Olopha revealed that fewer than 90 of approximately 200 suspected cases have been confirmed, highlighting the urgent need for collaboration between NCDC and the state government to effectively address the outbreak.

She also urged healthcare providers to avoid delays in referring suspected cases to the proper facilities, noting that timely interventions could reduce fatalities.

Additionally, Bayo Philip, the Head of Civil Service and leader of the state government team, reassured that the government remains dedicated to fighting Lassa fever and other health threats in the state.

Philip called for swift action from the Ministries of Health, Agriculture, Environment, and other relevant agencies to implement measures to prevent the recurring Lassa fever outbreaks. He also advocated for private healthcare providers to actively engage in the response efforts.

Furthermore, Philip urged traditional rulers and religious leaders to collaborate with the government in promoting hygienic food handling practices among residents.
