Meta Denies Forcing Trump Account Follows

Meta has denied allegations that it's forcing users to follow accounts belonging to the Trump administration, including those of President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice President JD Vance. According to Meta spokesman Andy Stone, the accounts in question "are managed by the White House, so with a new administration, the content on those pages changes" ¹.

Stone emphasized that users were not automatically made to follow the official Facebook or Instagram accounts of the Trump administration. He also noted that the same process occurred during the last presidential transition in 2021.

Some users have reported being unable to unfollow the Trump administration's accounts, but Stone attributed this to a delay in processing follow and unfollow requests as the accounts change hands.

The controversy comes amid Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's efforts to build a relationship with President Trump, including attending his inauguration ceremony and dining with him. Zuckerberg has also made changes to Meta's policies, such as shutting down its fact-checking program in the US, which has sparked concerns about the company's impartiality.
