Lagos hosted numerous events during “Detty December,” boosting tourism and culture.

Lagos State experienced a significant economic boost during the festive season, generating $71.6 million from various end-of-year activities under the "Detty December" campaign.

Idris Aregbe, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, revealed the figures in the ‘Lagos State Detty December 2024/2025 Report’. According to Aregbe, the state once again showcased why it is the tourism and entertainment capital of Africa, drawing attention to the substantial revenue generated across tourism, hospitality, and entertainment sectors.

Hotels alone contributed over $44 million, while short-let apartments accounted for over $13 million, underscoring Lagos’ economic potential as a prime destination city.

Aregbe commended the positive report from MO Africa Consulting, highlighting the millions in revenue generated during the season. He emphasized that tourism remains a crucial driver of economic growth and cultural preservation for Lagos State, with the “Ember” season playing a central role.

“During Detty December, Lagos hosted spectacular events such as the Mrs. Universe Africa, Greater Lagos Fiesta, music concerts, fashion shows, and cultural exhibitions, attracting both locals and international visitors,” said Aregbe. These events helped spotlight Nigeria's rich heritage and made Lagos a hub for cultural tourism.

The successful season also drew large crowds, including Nigerian diaspora members (IJGBs) and international tourists, eager to experience Lagos' vibrant energy.

Aregbe lauded the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat for their efforts in fostering growth in tourism and culture. He added that “Lagos Tourism is Rising” in 2025 would build upon this momentum to create more opportunities and ensure the city’s status as a global cultural destination.

He expressed gratitude to the people of Lagos, industry stakeholders, performers, and artisans for their vital contributions, which helped cement the city's position as Africa's tourism and entertainment capital.
