DSS Petitions X, Seeks Suspension Of Sowore’s Account Over Tinubu Criticism

The Department of State Services (DSS) has petitioned X (formerly Twitter), demanding the suspension of activist Omoyele Sowore’s verified account over a post critical of President Bola Tinubu.

In a letter dated September 6, 2025, and signed by B. Bamigboye on behalf of the DG, the DSS accused Sowore of hate speech, cybercrime, and incitement to violence.

The post in question, made on August 25, read: “This criminal @officialABAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is NO MORE corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!”

The DSS said the remark was “personally directed at Mr. President,” adding that it violated provisions of the Criminal Code, Cyber Crimes Act, and Terrorism Prevention Act. The agency also warned that the comments could spark unrest among Tinubu’s supporters.

The secret police therefore demanded that X Corp delete the post and deactivate Sowore’s account within 24 hours, or risk facing “far-reaching measures” from the Nigerian government.
