A wealthy Texas ranch broker, Asher Watkins, has d+ed after being fatally g%red by a Cape buffalo during a hunting expedition in South Africa.

The 52-year-old businessman, who was a managing partner at Watkins Ranch Group, had built his fortune trading ranch and land properties across Texas and Oklahoma. He was on a big game safari with Coenraad Vermaak Safaris, a company known for offering luxury hunting experiences in South Africa.

On Sunday, August 3, Watkins was tracking a Cape buffalo in Limpopo Province alongside a professional hunter and tracker when the animal suddenly turned aggressive. Despite not being wounded, the buffalo charged at a speed of about 35 miles per hour, fatally injuring Watkins.

In a statement, Hans Vermaak, representing the safari company, described the attack as “sudden and unprovoked,” adding, “It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts we confirm the tragic death of our client and friend Asher Watkins from the USA.”

Cape buffaloes are among Africa’s “Big Five” game animals, along with lions, leopards, elephants, and rhinoceroses.

Weighing between 937 to 1,918 pounds and standing up to 5.6 feet tall, the species is known for its unpredictable and d@ngerous behavior, even when unprovoked. Watkins had reportedly spent around $10,000 on the hunting trip before the fatal incident occurred.
