Gunmen Assassinate Rivers Chief Amid Rising Cult Violence.
Tensions have escalated in the Obelle community of Rivers State following the brutal assassination of a local traditional leader during a council meeting.
The Vice Chairman of the Obelle Council of Chiefs, in Emohua Local Government Area, was shot dead on Saturday in Omuwoka village during a gathering of chiefs.
Joseph Eze Dabiri, the chief’s son, confirmed the killing in a phone conversation with Channels Television on Sunday.
“I heard someone walked into the meeting, shot my father twice, and fled,” Joseph said, noting that the matter had been reported to the Rumuji Police Division. He urged authorities to ensure justice is served.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attack was carried out by suspected members of the Iceland cult group, allegedly led by a notorious figure known as Cairo. The assailants, who arrived on motorcycles, disrupted the meeting before Cairo reportedly approached the chief, shot him at close range, and fled after confirming his death.
The killing triggered panic among the chiefs and community members, with many fleeing the area by nightfall out of fear of further attacks.
While the Rivers State Police Command has yet to issue a formal statement, military personnel from the nearby Ibaa outpost have intensified patrols in the area.
This latest attack has reignited concerns about the growing wave of cult-related violence in Obelle. The community previously saw protests in November 2024, when a woman named Loveth Amadi accused Cairo of murdering her father, vigilante member Akpata Amadi.
With the rise in cult-linked killings, residents are now demanding immediate security intervention to halt the bloodshed and restore peace to the embattled community.
