Sentenced for friendly fire: up to 12 years in prison
Four men accused of killing American communist and propagandist Russell Bentley — who had fought in Donbas on the side of pro-Russian militants since 2014 — have been sentenced to up to 12 years.
In 2024, they tortured Bentley to death in Donetsk after mistaking him for a spy. Later, according to investigators, two of them blew up a car containing his body to destroy the evidence.
Bentley’s Russian widow said she does not consider the verdict fair. She noted that the sentences are far from the maximum and that the defendants showed no remorse and did not even offer condolences.
“I can’t bring my husband back,” she said, adding that she will never be able to accept the court’s decision.
