FG Says 67% of Nigerian Inmates Awaiting Trial
About 67% of inmates in Nigeria’s correctional facilities are awaiting trial, Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has said. Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, he noted that around 72% of inmates are state offenders, yet the Federal Government bears most of the cost of their upkeep.
Tunji-Ojo stressed the need for federal–state collaboration to improve correctional services and revealed that in July, 4,550 inmates — mostly held for minor or bailable offences — were released to decongest prisons.
The minister said President Bola Tinubu’s administration has invested in upgrading facilities since 2023, despite their poor state at the time. His comments follow a recent jailbreak in Keffi, Nasarawa State, where 16 inmates escaped, though some were later recaptured.
