The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) has confirmed that it has met the deadline for expressions of interest to bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, which was set for March 28, 2025.
However, Nigeria can only proceed with a formal bid if it receives official backing from the government.
In the past, Nigeria lost a bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games to Glasgow.
A statement issued by NOC spokesman Tony Nezianya highlighted that the country’s bid to host the 2030 Games in Abuja would offer a unique opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s development, boost its global reputation, and further energize its sports culture.
Nigeria last hosted a major multi-sport event in 2003, when it organized the African Games in Abuja.
“The experience gained from hosting the African Games will provide a strong foundation for Nigeria to host another major international event, demonstrating its ability to manage logistics, hospitality, and infrastructure development required for such large-scale events,” the NOC statement noted.
“It would also provide a powerful narrative of the nation’s progress and readiness to the world.”
The next Commonwealth Games will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from March 17 to March 29, 2026, after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew from hosting due to escalating costs.
