On Monday morning, operatives of the Nigeria Police Force dispersed protesters with tear gas in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The demonstration, which took place in the Maitama area, was organized by the Take-It-Back Movement and various civil society organizations to raise awareness on several national issues.

The protesters, who had gathered peacefully, were quickly met with tear gas canisters, causing many to flee for safety. The protest focused on key concerns such as the alleged misuse of the Cybercrime Act, the worsening economic crisis, and the state of emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu in Rivers State.

Carrying placards with slogans like “Stop the Repression” and “Let Us Breathe,” the protesters marched through the streets of the capital, calling for action on these pressing issues. Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore was present at the scene, showing his support for the movement.

In a statement issued last week, Juwon Sanyaolu, the National Coordinator of the Take-It-Back Movement, emphasized that the protest was intended to resist what he described as the “increasing authoritarianism” of the current administration. The demonstrators are demanding urgent relief for Nigerians grappling with inflation and insecurity.
