Angry youths in Ifon, Ondo State, attacked and set fire to a police station after a suspect died in police custody. The police have called for calm while investigations into the incident continue.

Angry youths in Ifon, Ondo State, attacked the local police station on Sunday, chasing officers away and setting the building on fire.

The unrest followed a violent clash between two youth groups on Valentine’s Day. After one group reported the incident to the police, two members of the opposing group were arrested. One of the arrested youths reportedly died from police torture, sparking protests that escalated into the destruction of the police station.

Ondo’s Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, visited the scene on Sunday to assess the situation. Police spokesperson Funmilayo Odunlami confirmed that a dispute between two families led to the incident. The situation worsened when one of the individuals involved in the altercation, Tobi Bobade, died in custody after being taken to the hospital. An angry mob, led by Bobade’s father, then attacked the police station, destroying several areas and vehicles.

Fortunately, no lives were lost in the fire. The Commissioner of Police condemned the violent act, vowing to hold the perpetrators accountable. The police have urged calm and assured the public that investigations are underway.
