Six people have been killed in Osun State amid violent clashes sparked by a court ruling on local government leadership. The police have condemned the violence and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
A violent crisis in Osun State has resulted in the deaths of six people, following a controversial Court of Appeal ruling that reportedly reinstated All Progressives Congress (APC)-elected local government chairmen and councillors.
The Osun State Police Command confirmed the fatalities to Channels Television on Tuesday, revealing that several others have been injured and are receiving medical treatment in hospitals across the state.
Governor Ademola Adeleke had raised concerns earlier, accusing a conspiracy involving Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, and some security agency leaders to enforce the ruling. The governor has called for Oyetola and the state’s security chiefs to be held accountable for any violence that ensues.
In response to the unrest, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the deployment of additional tactical squads to Osun to restore law and order. He condemned the violence, stressing that the police would not tolerate any form of lawlessness or anarchy, and vowed to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
The IGP’s statement emphasized the police’s commitment to restoring peace in the state and prosecuting those responsible for the violence that has disrupted public order and led to tragic losses of life. He urged the public to remain calm as efforts to bring stability continue, and called on Osun residents and leaders to reject violence and carry on with their daily activities.
