Nigerian Police Charge Islamic Cleric and Four Others for the Murder of Kwara College Student, Hafsoh

Islamic cleric Abdulrahman Mohad and four others have been arraigned for allegedly killing Kwara State student Hafsoh Yetunde for ritual purposes. Police investigation led to their arrest, with one suspect claiming sole responsibility for the murder.

The Nigerian Police Force has arraigned an Islamic cleric, Abdulrahman Mohad (also known as Mohammed A. Bello), and four others in Ilorin for the alleged ritual killing of Lawal Hafsoh Yetunde, a final-year student at Kwara State College of Education.

According to reports, Hafsoh was lured by the cleric after they connected on Facebook, where he obtained her phone number. The tragic incident took place on Monday, February 10, 2025.

It was reported that Hafsoh was attending a naming ceremony when she received a call from a friend. She left her food to take the call and then vanished. Family and friends searched for her without success before reporting her disappearance to the police at the Oja Oba Station in Ilorin the following day.

Police investigators traced Hafsoh’s last phone call, leading them to Abdulrahman, who resides in the Offa Garage area of Ilorin. His family home is in Isalekoto.

On Tuesday afternoon, multiple videos showed the cleric being brought to a Magistrate Court in Ilorin. He was arraigned alongside four others accused of aiding him in the murder. Those arrested include: 41-year-old Islamic scholar Ahmed Abulwasiu from Adualere in Ilorin, 28-year-old Neo Life business person Sulaiman Muhydeen from Amilegbe in Ilorin, 29-year-old phone repairer Jamiu Uthman from Adualere in Ilorin, and 31-year-old farmer AbdulRahman Jamiu from Elemere, Malete.

In their First Information Report, the police revealed that Abdulrahman and the others belong to the same occult group and confessed to robbing and killing Hafsoh for ritual purposes. However, in one of the videos, Abdulrahman stated, “I am the only one that killed her. These other people are not there.”

The court ordered that all suspects be remanded in prison until the next hearing date.
