The group Noname057(16) is behind the attack on Italian websites, including major banks and airports, following rising tensions between Italy and Russia.
A group of pro-Russian hackers has launched a cyberattack on around 20 Italian websites, including those of major banks and airports, amidst rising tensions between Italy and Russia.
Italy’s cybersecurity agency confirmed on Monday that the hacker group Noname057(16) was behind the attack, which impacted websites like Intesa Sanpaolo, Banca Monte dei Paschi, Iccrea Banca, and Milan’s Linate and Malpensa airports. Despite the attacks, no significant disruptions were reported, according to Reuters.
The timing of the attack follows a recent speech by Italian President Sergio Mattarella, where he compared Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to Nazi Germany’s expansionist ambitions before World War II. Moscow condemned his remarks, while Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni defended them. The cybersecurity agency indicated that the hackers were likely motivated by these comments.
Although Intesa Sanpaolo and SEA, which manages Milan’s airports, declined to comment, Iccrea Banca confirmed there were no disruptions. Banca Monte dei Paschi has not responded to requests for comment. Noname057(16) had also claimed responsibility for a similar cyberattack on Italy in December 2023, targeting several institutional websites.
